Today we went over slides dealing with Marshall McLuhan. We also discussed a little about the history of Comm Tech, but mostly I wanted the students to know the order of the inventions. Printing press was before the telegraph, which was before the telephone, which was before radio, etc. I will not hold them to remembering exact dates but the order is important so they can assess the enabling factors that make one technology possible because of another one. For example, the telegraph made the telephone possible. I gave them an assignment to explain why failed technologies fail and successful ones don’t. They chose to write that assignment out of class rather than in class, but it is due at the end of class son Friday.
