U of L Going to Use Dynamic IP Addresses for Desktops
0October 7, 2013 by Al
Hooray! The IT department at U of L is finally going to start using dynamic IP addresses on the desktop machines on campus. Up to now, all desktop computers had to have their MAC addresses registered with IT before they could access the Internet. Although IT was usually pretty quick about mapping the MACs to an IP address, there was still usually some down time. Now that is no more. All we need to do now is plug a computer in to an ethernet port and we are all to the races.
This change does not affect laptops or mobile devices because they have been using dynamic IPs for several years.
And if you need a static IP address for something such as a server or a printer, you can still have one.
